Before you even think about going to your local theater on July 8 to see “One Day,” hit up the library first and read the book.
David Nicholl’s book (of the same name) follows two people, Emma and Dex, over a span of 20 years. Each chapter catches up with the characters every year on the date they met, July 15. If the film is anything like the book, I’ll be blubbering like a baby in public. Yikes.
“One Day” is directed by Lone Scherfig (“An Education”), and Nicholls wrote the screenplay, so I have very high hopes for the film. Anne Hathaway stars as Emma Morley alongside Jim Sturgess as Dexter Mayhew.
Honestly, Hathaway is not who I pictured as Emma in the slightest, but I’m willing to give her a shot.
Don’t get me wrong, I love both Hathaway and Franco. I love them when they’re in their element, like “The Princess Diaries” and “Pineapple Express,” respectively.
The duo might be perfect to host an episode of SNL together, but The Oscars? I’m not convinced. It’s like throwing two academically advanced pre-teens into college before they’ve hit puberty. It’s just not right.
Who knows, I could be eating my words after The 83rd Academy Awards air on Feb. 27, 2011. But Hathaway and Franco could also be letting their inner TAG kid shine through, fumbling through a job better suited to someone more reputable than actors who are best known for portraying a princess and a stoner.
